Waikopiro is a 40 hectare block of land that forms the major catchment of Lake Waikopiro in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. One of the main trails of the Ngati Tatara people ran through this land, linking the coast to the lakes and beyond to the rich bird life of the Mangahararuru Ranges.
This challenging and beautiful land has been farmed for 30 years, allowing intense rainfall to have devastating effects on both the soil and the lake.
Kanuka regeneration has been encouraged over many years and a covenant has been placed on retired areas. Some clear areas will be left for walks and views of the beautiful landscape.
It is the wish of the land owners to encourage the native flora and fauna for future generations to enjoy. This project is also supported by Poutiri Ao o Tane.
